Empowering Local Learning

Our core strategy is to work with local people that are active small scale / subsistence farmers that want to transfer better information to others. Our first year, we tried teaching remotely and we learned the conditions, understandings and local variations make teaching a one size fits all set of instructions was not going to help local farmers.
Our second year, we went out and spent four months working in Zambia near Petauke. We tried multiple projects and the most successful was working hand in hand with 20 trainers that were dedicated for 4 months. During this time we were able to identify common practices and understandings. By working together, we were able to identify practices that could be implemented locally that can lead to continued improved maize production.
Towards the end of the second year, the focus was on using the 20 trainers to train over 2,000 villagers. The emphases was on Zambian trainers training Zambian villagers. This proved to be the most successful of all the projects we tried. About half of the trainers were from other areas in Zambia.
In the third year (2025-2026 growing season), the training continued and expanded into other areas of Zambia. It appears the trainers will be able to train over 10,000 villagers. This training is not a one time event, but rather sessions that will occur at least 4 times throughout the season. At the same time, the trainers are recruiting and developing additional trainers.
The trainers are in constant communications with new or ongoing issues. Solutions are being proposed and they are watching to see what solutions are working in their local area.
